3D Rendering Service Guide

What To Look For in a 3D Rendering Service

So you’ve decided you need some 3D renderings created, whether that’s an architectural visualization or a product render, the fundamentals remain the same with regards to separating the companies who will give you the best bang for your buck. This guide’s goal is to help you become a more educated buyer so that you can make choices which make the most sense for your project, budget and timeline.

Who Is This Guide For:

  • Architects and Designers.
  • Property Developers and Marketers.
  • Any first time 3D rendering buyers looking for still 3D renders or animations.
  • Past buyers looking to make a more educated decision or to get better results on their 3D visualization projects.

Understanding 3D Rendering Pricing

There are two main ways that rendering projects are priced: a custom quote for the project, or pre-set price per image. At Realspace, we exclusively custom quote projects because we feel that every client’s project and needs are unique. With 3D Renderings there is a massive price difference from one company to another, this comes down to a number of factors including  their quality of work, their quality of customer service, turnaround time, their location etc. Because this is a common question that comes up, we created an interactive 3D Rendering Service Pricing calculator. The prices shown give a good approximation of what your project would cost should you decide to work with RealSpace 3D. For more information read our full rendering pricing guide.

Beyond that there are generally two different price points for a project:1.The Basic project: ideal for gaining approval from regulatory bodies, this project is generally cheaper in cost and is used to serve simply as a communication of plans or an idea.2.The Premium project:  These projects are generally used to “wow” customers.  They are higher quality, more realistic and overall more visually stunning renders.  They tend to cost more.

It is recommended that you communicate what your needs are prior to the start of a project as most companies are capable of offering these different price points.

Understanding The Timeline: 3D Rendering Turnaround Time. How Long Does a 3D Render Take?

Turnaround time really depends on the client’s needs. Many companies advertise a 48-72 hour turnaround time, be cautious with this as it is likely you will get a cookie cutter image with no customization or it is possible they will provide you with a rough draft in that timeline. Creating a rendering in 2-3 days is not unheard of, in fact it is something RealSpace often does, however, it is not something we suggest. Our belief is that compromises need to be made in order to get a 3d rendering project done quickly, these compromises often include reduced revisions, reduced detail and overall a lesser final product.

Ideally we suggest you budget around 1-3 weeks of time for your rendering project to ensure you receive a high-quality, photorealistic image. This way, the company will work to satisfy your needs and complete your project properly.  If you are on a tight timeline some companies will charge an additional rush fee.

Evaluating Quality Of 3D Renders, What Make For A  Good 3D Rendering?

Like most things in life, 3D renders are not all created equal. Some characteristics of low end 3D renderings are:

  • Flat 2-dimensional feel to the image with straight-on camera angles
  • Companies using standardized vegetation, landscaping, and yards for many images in their portfolio is a dead giveaway of a cookie cutter slapped together image
  • Unrealistic lighting
  • Poor composition
  • Unprofessional camera angles – There’s no excuse for renderings to have anything less than perfect camera angles showing exactly what is required
  • Vertical lines not perpendicular to the horizon and converging
  • Horizon not perfectly horizontal
  • The clarity or sharpness of the image is low
  • Obvious noise, graininess, or errors
  • Repeating patterns, particularly in wood, stone, or grass.2 dimensional elements – these are added later with a photo editor
  • Off-scale elements.Obviously duplicated objects
  • Matte coloured elements
  • Unrealistic or out of place elements

3D Rendering Service Check List

What do you need in order to begin a 3D Rendering project?

When starting a new rendering project it is important to consider the following fundamentals to ensure you get the most out of your project and it operates as smoothly as possible.

Architectural plans

This is one of the first steps to having architectural renderings created. Whether you’re looking to show the exterior of a building or the interior, RealSpace 3d bases the pricing off of the architectural plans, floor plans and elevation drawings. The format that these are sent to us for quoting purposes isn’t super important; however, when the project begins it is our preference that the files are sent in CAD. That being said, we can work off of just about anything, sometimes even crayon scribbled on a napkin!

Q) Do we need to provide architectural plans to have a 3D Rendering done?

Projects which do not have architectural plans can still have architectural 3D renders created; however, the process is a little bit more challenging.  Typically we are sent images of similar buildings or interior spaces which we will draw inspiration from.  We won’t copy the buildings exactly but we will use them as reference to piece together what you need.

Describe what your expectations are

When having a 3d rendering created it is important to establish expectations for the project as a client. Is this project going to be used for marketing, and therefore, it needs to be of the highest quality possible? Or, is the project simply to appease regulatory bodies and will the cheapest option available be sufficient?

Q) When are cheap 3D renders “good enough”?

If the renderings required are simply to appease regulatory bodies getting cheap renders may be a good option, although be leery of some cheap overseas companies.  Creating imagery for regulatory bodies to gain approval can still require the use of high quality 3D. A top rendering company will be able to capture the buildings in the most favorable ways, which can help to sway those making decisions or giving approval. In addition to using these images for their current application, they may be useful in the future should one decide to sell. If price is of the utmost importance at this stage, make it clear to the rendering company you’re in contact with so that they can attempt to accommodate your needs.

Q) When should one spend more money on 3D Renders to get higher quality images?

3D Rendering for marketing developments and houses require high end imagery. 3D Renders are one of the most cost effective marketing tools available when a new development is looking to attract presales. Because of this, it makes sense to spend a little extra to acquire top of the line renders to ensure things are done properly. In many situations, creating a comprehensive architectural rendering package including a strong online presence is sufficient for the sales process and can allow one to avoid the need to build a full sales center. Sales centers are typically upwards of $100, 000 to build, and, although they are useful, their cost is not necessary if the property is in a hot real estate market.

Q) How do we pick the camera angles for the renders?

Deciding on a camera angle is something 3D Rendering companies will work with you on.  During the preliminary stages we will ask you about the general area you want to show in your 3D renderings, for example telling us that you would like to show a front façade rendering and a wide-angle shot showing the kitchen and living room. Once that has been established, for pricing purposes, we will do a rough markup on the architectural plans to confirm the camera angle.  After receiving confirmation, we move onto the final camera angle confirmation. We typically send 3 clay render camera options for you to make your final selection.

Q) Do we need to hire an interior designer to provide interior finishes?

As is the case with providing architectural drawings, we can work from either: very specific interior design plans which provide us with the exact furniture and finishes like flooring and wall color or we can work from a general reference image to guide us towards the style of room you’d like to show.

Typically we suggest clients provide us with as much information as possible, whether it is with reference images or with full on interior design plans and swatches.

When providing full interior design specifications for an interior 3D rendering job, it is preferable that we receive high resolution reference when possible along with product names so we can match examples closely.

Although your project may not yet have it’s design settled on there is a good chance you, as the client, have decided on things you absolutely do not want, because of this it is important to still provide stylistic examples (online images of spaces you do like) so that we can gain a sense for your general taste.

 Q) Do we need to hire a landscape architect for exterior 3D Renderings?

Even without landscape plans we can apply our own landscaping to the exterior renderings which fit the environment and mood of the image.

Landscape details: Landscape architectural plans are not always readily available when a project is still in its infancy; however, they are great for helping to set the mood of a shot and framing in an image.

Q) How long does a 3D Rendering take to complete?

The timeline to create a basic 3D exterior render, for example, will depend on the overall scope of the project; however, it isn’t uncommon for us to complete projects in just a few days if the timeline is very tight. It is very important to express your timeline expectations at the start of a project, rushed timelines are common in this industry and so it’s something we are well equipped to handle, be sure to express if there is a deadline approaching in coming days or weeks to ensure we can plan accordingly. In addition, we suggest clients leave as much time as possible for a project to allow for a full 3 rounds of revisions and the highest possible quality.
